No corps member lost to 2023 general elections, NYSC explains

National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has confirmed that no serving member died during the 2023 general elections.

The Director-General, Brig.-Gen. Yusha’u Dogara Ahmed, who made the disclosure during a parley with chief executives of media houses in Abuja, reassured that safety and security of corps members remained a priority.

The interaction was part of activities to mark the scheme’s 50th anniversary.

He explained that corps members were not posted as ad hoc staff to any state or area considered vulnerable during the polls.

Ahmed added that only 10 corps members have so far been lost to electoral violence since the NYSC signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in 2011.

He said serving corps members now enjoy insurance cover.

The agency, recently, unveiled enrolment of members into the National Health Insurance Scheme under the NYSC Group Individual Family Social Health Insurance programme.

He submitted that the scheme recently paid insurance cover for corps members, who lost their lives.

“We are tightening collaboration with our security agencies to ensure safety of corps members,” the DG stated.
