Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai on Wednesday rubbished the currency design of President Muhammadu Buhari, saying it does not make any political or economic sense at this time.
Nigerians have been going through hardship and suffering as there are no cash to withdraw from banks or ATMs.
El-Rufai, who spoke on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily programme, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele should not be blamed for the hardship, but the president who initiated the move.
According to him, “The currency redesign, you have to understand the president. People are blaming the Governor of the Central Bank for the currency redesign, but No.
“You have to go back and look at Buhari’s first outing as president.”
El-Rufai said Buhari did the same thing during his military regime when he changed the currency secretly to catch those who were stashing illicit funds.
He said it was a good intention from the president as he has the right, but said it was ill-timed at this period.
“He did it; the Buhari-Idiagbon regime changed our currency in secrecy in order to catch those who were stashing illicit funds.
“It is a very good intention. The president has his rights. But doing it at this time within the allotted time does not make any political or economic sense,” he said.

Two persons have been sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a 14-year-old girl in Ekiti.
The defendants, Salau Adams (21) and Odeleye Tobi (21), were convicted and sentenced by the state High Court sitting in Ado-Ekiti, its capital.
The convicts were arraigned before Justice Olalekan Olatawura on May 13, 2022.
The police charge read that the defendants on February 28, 2022, at Awo Ekiti in Irepodun/Ifelodun LGA, conspired and raped the girl, contrary to Section 421 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State and Section 31(2) of the Child’s Rights Law, Cap. C7, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.
In her statement to the police, the victim said, “I know Adams and Tobi on the street. On that day, I was hawking fried meat; they called me and bought meat worth N100 each. They pretend to bring out money and Adams brought out a black handkerchief. I decided to report them to my mother. When I turned, Tobi held and carried me from the back while Adams covered my mouth with the black handkerchief. I was carried to a nearby bush behind their house. Adams first forcefully had sex with me and Tobi also did the same. Thereafter, they ran away.
“I went back home crying, with blood stains on my clothes. I told my mother what happened, and some of our neighbours followed my mother to their house but they were not at home. The matter was reported at the police station and they were later arrested.”
The prosecutor, Adeola Arogundade, called eight witnesses and tendered defendants’ statements and medical report as exhibits.
The defendants spoke through their counsel, O.G. Abiola, who pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy, noting that they were young and could still be useful to society.
Justice Olalekan Olatawura said rape and defilement of children in the court’s jurisdiction was fast assuming a frightening dimension, hence that it was the duty of the court to send the right signal to would-be rapists.
He held that, “The only way to discourage this dastardly and bestial act would be to punish those found guilty severely.
“I, therefore, hold that the prosecution has proved beyond reasonable doubt that the defendants had sexual intercourse with the victim and it was not consensual.
“From the proved facts, it can be inferred and I so do that the defendants conspired to commit the offence of rape.
“Consequently, the two defendants are hereby sentenced to life imprisonment.”
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission detained Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin, a Twitter user from Abuja who goes by the handles
@SimisolaGold and Simisola of Lala, on Wednesday for selling brand-new naira notes on social media, according to The PUNCH.
Although Omoseyin had yet to name other members of the syndicate, newsmen learned that she was cooperating with the investigation.
The arrest was made as a result of intelligence received, which led ICPC officials to seek out and apprehend the suspect.
Mrs. Azuka Ogugua, the anti-graft agency’s spokesperson, revealed in a statement obtained by newsmen on Wednesday night.
Mrs. Ogugua said, “Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin, a social media ‘serial entrepreneur,’ who deals in skincare, sales of fuel, facilitation of foreign travels through visa acquisitions, and other businesses, seized the opportunity of the scarcity of the new naira notes to openly market the new notes.
“It is believed that she is in collusion with key elements in the financial services sector diverting the newly released notes away from banking halls and payment channels into a ‘black market’.”
Ogugua further noted that Omoseyin is currently in the ICPC detention and is helping the commission with its findings on the criminal trading of the naira and the attendant scarcity and negative economic outcomes being caused by the action.
The anti-graft agency noted that the action is in furtherance of the collaboration between the Central Bank of Nigeria, the ICPC, and its sister anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, in implementing the new cashless policy and naira redesign.
Former governor of Ogun state, Ibikunle Amosun, has accused the current governor, Dapo Abiodun, of deviating from the state’s development agenda.
This was stated by Amosun, a sitting Senator in the National Assembly representing Ogun Central under the All Progressives Congress (APC), when he joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) campaign flag-off at the Arcade ground, Ake palace, in Abeokuta on Wednesday.
In a BBC Yoruba interview last year, Amosun sided with ADC governorship candidate Biyi Otegbeye against his party’s flag bearer, Abiodun, who he claimed was rigged into power in 2019 against his preferred candidate of the Alliance Progressive Movement (APM), Abdulkabir Adekunle Akinlade.
The former governor, who was also visibly absent at the APC’s Presidential campaign in the state last Wednesday, arrived at about 1:55pm on foot and was greeted with great
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship campaign train which was slated for Ado-Odo Ota Local Government same day was ignored by the former governor, like the other campaigns of the party in the state.
Addressing the party faithful, Amosun said, “I believe strongly that the presidency should come to the South, that is why I am supporting Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. All the Amosun political family is supporting Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“There are two reasons why I am doing what I am doing today, the first is, since the creation of Ogun State, nobody from Ogun West has been governor. Some characters are saying they don’t have good people but I know they have, this is one of them, Biyi Otegbeye. Ogun West is home of important and well meaning people in the country, they are tested and trusted.
“Secondly, we have set a path for development in Ogun State and we must not allow it to be derailed. I feel sad when I see what is going on in the last four years. We must be ready to fight it.
“I have said it already, I am in APC but that programme that was set should have been followed but now look at what is happening to your state. Before I left we put Ogun state on the path of greatness with the support of God. I did everything humanly possible to make things work well but today we can’t see anything.
“I spent million on a project and they claimed to use billions in renovation, we did things to benefit all but because it’s Amosun they didn’t go there, we want someone that can follow that path and continue from where we have stopped.
“I am APC but for the governorship election in the state, I am going to work, I am already working with Barrister Biyi Otegbeye and his deputy.”
Speaking after his endorsement, Otegbeye maintained that his emergence was to continue with the giant strides of the former governor, saying that his focus would be on the economy of the state.
Four South African police policemen have been arrested for allegedly torturing a Nigerian man to coma over his identity documents.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) said the four members of the Boksburg North Visible Policing unit were arrested on Wednesday, February 1, 2023.
The IPID spokesperson, Lizzy Suping, said the Nigerian and his friends were approached by the police officers who demanded to see their identity documentation on January 9.
“When the victim could not produce an original copy of the required documentation, he was taken to the police station where he was allegedly assaulted and tortured by the officers. The victim was taken to hospital for medical attention where he was in a coma for nine days.” she said.
Suping said the four officers, a sergeant and three constables, face charges of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and defeating the ends of justice.
The four officers were arrested at their place of work today and will be detained at the Boksburg police station.
They are expected to make their first appearance in the Boksburg Magistrates Court on Friday.
Rivers govt withdraws approval of stadium for Atiku’s campaign rally in Port Harcourt
Written by AdminThe Rivers State Government has withdrawn its earlier verbal approval of the use of the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium for the hosting of the Presidential Campaign rally of his party, the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, in Rivers State.
The government disclosed this yesterday in a letter dated 31st January, 2023, and addressed to His Excellency,
Rt. Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, the Director General of PDP’s Presidential Campaign Council.
The State Commissioner for Sports, Barr. Christopher Green, who signed the letter on behalf of the government, said the decision was following an alleged plan by the PDP to share the approved venue with the All Progressives Congress, APC.
Green noted that the government was not ready to allow any for of damage on the state facility.
The letter read: “Credible intelligence available to the Government of Rivers State and recent developments now show that your Presidential Campaign Organization is working in collaboration and in-cohorts with a faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State led by Tonye Patrick Cole and that it is the intention of your Presidential Campaign Organization to accommodate and share the approved facility for your campaign with the said faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Government.
“Records show that the activities of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State have always been marred by violence due largely to irreconcilable internal conilicts within the party including shootings and kilings in the course of protests arising from the nomination process of delegates for primaries and deronation of explosives in the course of Campaigns.
“The Rivers state Government is unable to risk damage to or destruction of the very valuable and priced asset, the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium which your use of the same in collaboration with your Tonye Patrick Cole APC faction will definitely expose it to.
“In the circumstance, the Rivers State Government has come to the inevitable decision to withdraw the approval earlier given to you for the use of the stadium and the said approval is hereby withdrawn.”
Aisha, wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, on Wednesday, shared the video of Governor Nasir El-Rufai, saying there are some “elements” in Aso Rock working against Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
She posted the video on her Instagram handle without any comment attached to it.
Earlier in the day, El-Rufai, while speaking on Sunrise Daily, a Channels Television breakfast programme, said these persons, whose identities he did not disclose were aggrieved that Tinubu defeated their candidate in the APC presidential primaries.
He said these elements were hiding behind President Muhammadu Buhari’s desire to do what he thinks is right.
He said, “I believe there are elements in the Villa that want us to lose the election because they didn’t get their way; they had their candidate. Their candidate did not win the primaries.
“They are trying to get us to lose the election, and they are hiding behind the president’s desire to do what he thinks is right. I will give two examples: this petroleum subsidy, which is costing the country trillions of Naira, was something that we all agreed would be removed.”
The action of the First Lady has sparked different reactions on social media.
The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi, has blamed the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele for the hardship induced by new naira notes.
Oba Akanbi also noted that the new naira regime has grounded economic activities in Nigeria adding that implementation of such ought to have been gradual to ease commercial activities.
In a statement by Alli Ibraheem, his Chief Press Secretary on Wednesday, Oluwo who called for urgent close monitoring to ensure naira circulation alleged that the plan was to instigate Nigerians against the legacy of President Muhammadu Buhari.
The traditional ruler alleged that many Nigerians have been stranded, immobile and made vulnerable to starvation due to the scarcity of the new Naira note.
The statement reads: “The new naira regime has inflicted much hardship on Nigerians. It has grounded the country’s economic activities. It’s worsening every day. As a father with voice, I must speak out.
“The CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele owe Nigerians apology for inducing such a hardship. I’m yet to be convinced about the introduction of new naira notes without proper measures to provide adequate inflow of new notes in circulation. It’s gross insensitivity to human feelings. Many are stranded, immobile and starved due to [the] non-availability of new notes.”
Alleging “an intention to blackmail the infrastructural legacies of President Muhammadu Buhari,” the king called on the federal government and federal legislators to checkmate the CBN governor, and “veto an unconditional extension of the deadline and ensure the new notes are widely circulated.”
He further averred: “Emefiele needs to address Nigerians again to holistically justify the introduction of the new note and the deadline without enough money in circulation. We can’t continue suffering and keep mute. This is really bad at a time INEC will need resources for logistics.”
Oba Akanbi called on stakeholders, most especially the federal government, to review the policy with a view to alleviating the hardship on innocent Nigerians.
Revealing that traditional rulers are not left out of the naira impasse, he implored the legislators to veto the enforcement of the extension and provision of enough naira notes by CBN.
Barely three weeks to the presidential election, a former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has said Bola Tinubu the candidate of All Progressives Congress, APC, is unstoppable.
Fani-Kayode said presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and Labour Party and fifth columnists from the Presidential Villa plotting against Tinubu can’t stop him.
He also noted that traitors and the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, can’t come in between Tinubu and President Muhammadu Buhari.
In a series of tweets, Fani-Kayode wrote: “The few in the Villa plotting against @Official AbAT can’t stop him.
@atiku and @Peter Obi can’t stop him.
ING can’t stop him. CBN can’t stop him.
“Traitors can’t stop him, and neither can ANY of them come between him and
@MBuhari.
“We are taking you ALL on and we shall prevail!”
Recalls that Tinubu had accused some forces in the Presidential Villa of sabotaging his campaign.
Tinubu lamented that the fuel scarcity and CBN naira swap policy were aimed against him.
Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State also corroborated Tinubu’s allegation.
El-Rufai said some forces in the Presidential Villa against Tinubu’s emergence as APC flagbearer are working to sabotage his campaign.
The federal government has said that it is not aware of some people in the Presidential Villa working against the victory of the presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the February 25, 2023 elections.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, stated this on Wednesday while reacting to the allegations by Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State that some people in Aso Rock were working to frustrate Tinubu while featuring as a guest on Channels Television breakfast programme,) Sunrise Daily.
The minister said officially, government was not aware of anyone within the Presidential Villa engaging in such action.
He said the government had been fair to all candidates regardless of party affiliation and that President Muhammmadu Buhari had consistently demonstrated that he was for free, fair and credible elections.
The minister, who was asked to react after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, said: “On a more serious note, one thing I can assure you is that no matter what, this administration is focused, determine to ensure a free and fair elections. But I think with this administration, the most important person is Mr. President and I think he has shown by words and by deeds that he is committed to free, fair and credible election.
“And fair, free, credible election actually means not favouring anybody or disadvantaging anybody. And everywhere he goes, he makes that very clear even as recently as Friday when he was in Daura, he said the same thing.
“If there’s anybody working against a candidate, we don’t know officially.”
El-Rufai had said the saboteurs in Aso Rock were those whose candidates lost at the party’s presidential primary and are still bitter.
He said: ”I believe there are elements in the Villa that want us to lose the election because they didn’t get their way; they had their candidate. Their candidate did not win the primaries.
“They are trying to get us to lose the election and they are hiding behind the president’s desire to do what he thinks is right.
“I will give two examples: this petroleum subsidy, which is costing the country trillions of Naira, was something that we all agreed would be removed. In fact, I had a discussion with the President and showed him why it had to go. Because how can you have a capital budget of N200b for federal roads and then spend N2 trillion on petroleum subsidy? This was a conversation I had with the President in 2021 when the subsidy thing started rising. He was convinced. We left. It changed. Everyone in the government agreed, and it changed.
“The second example I will give is this currency redesign. You have to understand the President. People are blaming the Governor of the Central Bank for the currency redesign, but No. You have to go back and look at the first outing of Buhari as President. He did this; the Buhari, Idiagbon regime changed our currency and did it in secrecy with a view to catching those that are stashing away illicit funds. It is a very good intention. The President has his right. But doing it at this time within the allotted time does not make any political or economic sense.”
Tinubu had, during his rally in Ogun State, claimed some fifth columnists in government using the fuel and new naira notes crisis to sabotage the party’s electoral chances.
The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Godwin Emefiele subsequently extended the deadline of phasing out the old naira notes few days after his Tinubu’s remarks on scarcity fuel and new naira notes.

According to him, the attackers came in large number in four Toyota Sienna vehicles.
He said in a statement that the command has made heavy deployment of security personnel around the state to forestall further attacks in other places.
He said, “Anambra State Police Command today 1/2/2023 has reinforced security deployment in the state, following an attack on the INEC office in idemili south, Ojoto and Nnobi Police Station.
“The hoodlums came in their numbers by 1:45 am today 1/2/2023, with four unmarked Sienna vehicles, armed with IEDs, Petrol bombs and other explosives.
“They invaded the INEC office, the police station and the residential building in the station. She has been taken to the hospital where she is receiving treatment.”
Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of INEC in Anambra State, Dr Kingsley Agu, did not pick up his calls or respond to a text message sent to his mobile on the attack.

El-Rufai’s bombshell comes a week after the ruling party’s presidential candidate said there were plans to stop him from winning the election.
Tinubu had said fuel scarcity and naira redesign were targeted at him.
The Registrar of Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Ishaq Oloyede has ordered some computer-based JAMB registration centres in Kano, to produce a final year law student and five others for allegedly involved in impersonation and other crimes which were against the rules and regulations of the agency.
Professor Oloyede who gave the order on Wednesday during his inspection of some computer-based registration centres in the State, said that the above six people, engaged in thumbprint for several candidates and would be prosecuted by the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC)
According to him, as far as JAMB is concerned, “we have seen there is little or nothing to be corrected” adding that “though we have discovered some sharp practices that had been done”.
“Almost all of them caught in the act had confessed to committing the offence, because substituting their fingerprints for a candidate, meant that they would go to examination halls and write the examination for such a person.
2023 UTME registration: Provision of personal e-mail compulsory from Jan 31, says JAMB
“We were calling on candidates to be wary of these shady practices and be vigilant, that on no reason any candidate should allow any other person to add his|her own finger to their own finger when doing biometric.”
Prof. Oloyede disclosed that those two were uncovered at Federal College of Education Kano and four discovered at Butale computer centre.
He said they must be brought to Abuja, where they would be handed over to security agencies and the ICPC for proper prosecution.
He added that unknown to many people, the JAMB has introduced a high-tech mechanism capable of not only discovering malpractices but also capable revealed anomalies of thump print for another candidate during registration.
Prof.Oloyede then added that the JAMB have evidence and those who committed such an offence have confessed to committing the offence of conniving with candidates to substitute fingerprints for them adding that “they have questions to answer”.
However, when commenting on the fate of a final law student that was uncovered to have allegedly committed impersonation, he said “law has no respect for anybody”.
