Nigeria emerged as the seventh Sub-Saharan African country with the most stressed employees, according to a global labour report.
Gallup’s State of the Global Workplace 2023 Report, which examines how employees feel about their work and their lives, revealed that global worker stress remained at a historic high from the COVID period, even as other negative emotions related to the pandemic subsided.
In Nigeria, 50 per cent of workers experience stress in the workplace, a figure that has risen by 3 per cent annually.
Senegal recorded the same stress rate, fairing a little better than Chad, Uganda, Tanzania, Ghana, and Sierra Leone, which recorded higher stress rates of up to 58 per cent.
The report reveals that Sub-Saharan recorded the third-highest regional percentage of daily stress and the third-highest regional percentage of daily anger.
Half of over one thousand Nigerians sampled relate experiencing stress in the workplace, with 23 per cent of the Nigerian participants recounting experiencing feelings of anger.
“My work does not give me the opportunity to go to church, visit family members, or travel for a while,” Bolaji, 39, a cashier in Nigeria told Gallup.

Out of those dissatisfied with the stress levels at their workplaces, 70 per cent indicate intent to leave their current job; A figure much higher than the global average of 55 per cent.
This percentage is prevalent in Sub-Saharan Africa, which records the highest regional percentage of employees watching for or actively seeking a new job.
20 per cent of the population affirm being engaged and thriving at work, 60 per cent are not engaged and quiet quitting, while 21 per cent are actively disengaged and loud quitting.
The employees admit that 46 per cent of the negative emotions felt during a lot of days as a result of stress and 26 per cent of those feelings spur from anger.
The analysis found that engagement has 3.8 times as much influence on employee stress as work location.
In other words, what employees experience in their everyday work — their feelings of involvement and enthusiasm — matters more in reducing stress than where they are sitting.
Stress levels are reportedly predominant among the male population and among workers more than 40 years old.
The report also shows that 46 per cent of stressed employees occupy managerial positions while 44 per cent are individual contributors. 43 per cent of whom work exclusively remotely, 49 per cent hybrid, and 45 per cent work on-site.
“Leaders need to ask if poor remote work performance or poor hybrid work performance is a location problem or a management problem. No location can fix poor management, and the office alone has no magic to create a great organizational culture,” the global advisory company wrote.
Addressing employee well-being concerns
Gallup’s data, obtained from over 122 thousand employees worldwide, reports that low engagement costs the global economy $8.8 trillion.
“That’s 9% of global GDP, enough to make the difference between success and a failure for humanity,” the report read.
According to Indermit Gill, the World Bank’s chief economist, “A lost decade could be in the making for the global economy. The ongoing decline in potential growth has serious implications for the world’s ability to tackle the expanding array of challenges unique to our times — stubborn poverty, diverging incomes, and climate change.”
“The message is clear. Economic growth is slowing. And if we don’t increase global GDP, every other problem gets harder to solve,” Gallup wrote in their report. “So, what can leaders do today to potentially save the world? Change the way your people are managed.”
“As organizational leaders endeavor to navigate an uncertain economic outlook, their employees’ stress is impacting productivity and performance. Addressing these wellbeing concerns and improving engagement should be top priorities for the world’s political and business leaders who seek to make the most of the recovery.” it added.

The police on Thursday continued their investigation into the circumstances leading to the death of the late singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba aka Mohbad.
This followed the invitation extended to Mohbad’s family and the group of persons mentioned in the ongoing probe of the illegal embalming of the deceased’s body following his death.
PUNCH Metro reported that Boluwatife Adeyemo aka Darosha who was the Personal Assistant to Mohbad was interrogated at the Zone 2 Police Headquarters in the presence of the deceased’s father Joseph and mother, Abosede.
The police, upon interrogating Darosha, thereby asked all those mentioned in his statement to be brought in for further interrogation.
The head of the family’s legal team, Monisola Odumosu, in a statement sent to our correspondent on Wednesday, however, stated that the second interrogatory meeting was held at the Zone 2 Police Headquarters in Lagos State on Tuesday.
Odumosu added that the police were working to reveal the identity of the “illegal mortician.”
“The police will reveal to the public soon, who illegally embalmed the body of the late singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, widely known as Mohbad.
“The police stated they would work on their report and continue investigations which will be directed to the Legal Department of the force for a recommendation.
“The meeting was held at Zone 2 and present at the meeting were Mr. Joseph Aloba (Mohbad’s father), Boluwatife Adeyemi (aka Darosha), Adura Aloba (Mohbad’s younger brother), Mrs. Abosede Olumuyi (Mohbad’s mother) and Cynthia Omowunmi Aloba (Mohbad’s wife). Others include Iya Lolade and Samuel (Mr. Joseph Aloba’s witnesses) and lawyers to the parties,” Odumosu added.
The family’s legal team had earlier, on the instruction of their client, petitioned the police that Boluwatife Adeyemo, the personal assistant to the late Mohbad, had embalmed the body of the late singer which violates Section 16 and 48 of the Coroner’s System Law, 2007, which addresses the offences and penalties of tampering with a dead body.
The police upon interrogating Darosha have asked all those mentioned in his statement to be brought in for further interrogation.
Shortly after Mohbad’s death, his cousin, Darosha, on his social media handle, daroshagram, wrote “…About the salt, when my father died, a salt was placed on his chest till we arrived and was told it was local embalming to keep him fresh till the whole family arrived, and I did the same thing (on Mohbad) because a lot of people were still coming to see him before leaving to Ikorodu that night.”
The post sparked controversy in social media and legal circles that led to the need to discover who embalmed the late singer without regard to extant laws.
The legal team further stated that they were awaiting the police report as soon as the police got the legal advice from their legal department. It is then they will be properly informed the recommended persons will face prosecution.
Mohbad’s father had alleged that his son’s body was already embalmed and placed by the staircase when he arrived at the deceased’s home the day he died.
He made this known while calling on the police to intensify the investigation to unravel the cause of his son’s death.
Mohbad died on September 12 at the age of 27, with the circumstances surrounding his death sparking controversy on social media.
Mohbad, a former record label signee of Marlian Music owned by Naira Marley, left the label in February 2022.
The Lagos State Police Command on September 18, 2023, inaugurated a 13-man special investigation team to probe the death.
His death also led to the arrest of Naira Marley and controversial Lagos socialite Balogun Eletu, aka Sam Larry, amongst others.
The body of Mohbad was exhumed on September 21, 2023, for an autopsy to unravel the cause of his death.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, tweeted in September 2023 that an autopsy had been concluded and the police were “awaiting results.”
The PUNCH exclusively reported that the toxicology test carried out to determine the cause of death of the late music star had been concluded.
The result had been sent to the pathologist who carried out the autopsy to analyse and interpret it.

The Ogun State Police Command said it had arrested a septuagenarian landlord, identified simply as Adesina, for allegedly defiling and impregnating his tenant’s 14-year-old girl (name withheld) at Akegbeyale Street in Ifesowapo Akute, Ifo Local Government Area of the state.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the residents and other tenants were thrown into a state of shock when the septuagenarian suspect was found on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, having sexual intercourse with the 14-year-old girl at about 10:15 pm in the house bathroom.
The minor, according to a police source who was part of the team that arrested the 71-year-old suspect but was not permitted to speak for the command, was said to have made her way to the apartment’s bathroom to take a shower.
Our correspondent learnt that a few seconds later, the landlord was said to have gained entrance into the same bathroom and was believed to be having sexual intercourse with the teenager before he was caught in the act.
After this shocking discovery, some members of the community and other neighbours who witnessed the scene raised the alarm, leading to the arrest of the landlord by the men of the Ajuwon Police Division.
PUNCH Metro gathered that upon advice by the police and others on the need for the minor to be treated to avoid any infection, the father was said to have taken the 14-year-old girl to the hospital for medical examination.
However, the result of the test was said to have indicated that the minor was about six weeks pregnant.
Confirming the incident on Wednesday, the spokesperson for the state Police Command, Omolola Odutola, told our correspondent the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, where all parties would be grilled.
“The landlord has been arrested and detained. The father reported that he was caught defiling his 14-year-old daughter in their bathroom in the morning. The teenager was taken to Tamara Hospital in Akute for a medical examination.
“However, the medical report further showed that that wasn’t a first-time act because the test showed that the teenager was already six weeks pregnant. The state CID in Eleweran will soon take up the matter for further investigation,” Odutola stated.
In November 2023, the operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps reportedly apprehended another 76-year-old man, David Ogunsanwo, for allegedly defiling a 16-year-old girl in the Abeokuta area of the state. The teenager was also reportedly five months pregnant.
David Akanmu, who was the Best Graduating Student at the 54th convocation ceremony of the University of Lagos, UNILAG, has been selected as a 2024 Knight-Hennessy Scholar at Stanford University in the United States.
Akanmu’s selection was announced yesterday.
It was the third time a graduate of the university would be clinching the award.
UNILAG is the only African university among the 60 from where the 2024 cohort of 90 new scholars emerged.
According to the announcement, Akanmu is one of five Africans, the only one from an African-based tertiary institution, selected to join the 2024 cohort, which is is the seventh and largest cohort since the inception of the award.

The father of the late 12 year-old student of Dowen College, Lagos who was allegedly bullied to death by some students of the same school, Sylvester Oromoni Snr, has rejected the Coroner’s report on the death of the young boy, accusing the coroner of “covering up the cause of death” of his son.
In the five page review of the Coroner’s Report made available to Vangaurd, the father of the deceased said: “During the reading of the verdict of 325 pages, the Coroner shed crocodile tears not less than seven times in open court. In fact, he had to rise twice and retired into his chambers to cry more than the bereaved. The coroner claimed that my son died of natural cause. The Coroner deliberately delayed the case in order to cover up the cause of the tragic death of my son as I will explain below”.
Mr Oromoni said this “dubious verdict” will not discourage him from pursuing justice especially to ensure that all other students in Dowen College and other schools do not suffer the same fate his late son did.
While narrating what happened at the inquest, Mr Oromoni disclosed that despite the request of his legal team led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr. Femi Falana, for a visit to Dowen College to enable the Coroner to ascertain the state of the school before the death of his son, it took the Coroner about 17 months to finally carry out the visit, ostensibly to give the management enough time to fix up the physical deficiencies in the school.
“In his desperate bid to exonerate Dowen College of any liability, the Coroner turned round in his verdict to applaud the authorities of the school for upgrading the facilities during the proceedings,” Oromoni Senior stated.
He also accused the Coroner of suppressing material facts of the bullying of his son by a clique of students, in order to further exonerate the management of Dowen College of any liability.
Mr Oromoni noted that though the coroner proceeded to blame the cause of death on “parental negligence”, it is on record that no witness indicted him as he took all steps recommended by the family doctor to save the life of his son.
In rejecting what he called “the wicked and heartless conclusion of the Coroner”, Mr Oromoni detailed areas in the Coroner’s findings where he alleged vital evidences were suppressed as well as the alleged negligence of Dowen College which led to his son’s death.
He also narrated how his son was allegedly killed as well as the role of the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecution which gave two contradictory legal opinions, one recommending the prosecution of Dowen College and another exonerating the school and its management even in the absence of fresh proof to back same.
While thanking the good people of Nigeria who stood by the family, Oromoni Senior also called on the Lagos State Government to investigate several cases of bullying in Dowen College.
He said, “Since the coroner decided to cover up the killers of my son, we shall take appropriate actions to unravel the mystery surrounding his death. Finally, I am compelled to call on the Lagos State Government to take urgent steps to investigate the several cases of bullying of students in Dowen College. The students and management staff involved in inflicting torture on helpless students in the school should be brought to book without any delay”.

Togolese President Faure Gnassingbe has signed a controversial new constitution that abolishes presidential elections.
The new constitution has been widely condemned by the opponents and civil societies saying it would allow his family to extend their six-decade-long rule.
According to a statement from Gnassingbe’s office on Monday, under teh new legislation, only the parliament will have the power to select the president, eliminating direct elections.
According to Africa News, the election commission on Saturday announced that Gnassingbe’s ruling party had won a majority of seats in the nation’s parliament.
The report revealed that there was a crackdown on civic and media freedoms ahead of the vote, as the government banned protests against the proposed new constitution and arrested opposition figures.
Also, the electoral commission banned the Catholic Church from deploying election observers.
In mid-April, a French journalist who arrived to cover the elections was arrested, assaulted and expelled. Togo’s media regulator later suspended the accreditation process for foreign journalists.
Provisional results showed the ruling Union for the Republic (UNIR) party won 108 out of 113 seats in parliament, and 137 out of 179 positions in the senate.
The new constitution also increases presidential terms from five to six years and introduces a single-term limit.
However, the almost 20 years that Gnassingbe has already served in office would not count toward that tally.
Togo has been ruled by the same family for 57 years, initially by Eyadema Gnassingbe and then by his son, Faure Gnassingbe, who took office after elections that the opposition described as a “sham.”
The political opposition, religious leaders and civil society say the proposed new constitution makes it likely that Gnassingbe will stay on when his mandate expires in 2025.
They also fear that the creation of a figure similar to a prime minister, to be selected from the ruling party, could become another avenue for Gnassingbe to extend his grip on power even beyond that new term.
A group of about 20 civil society organizations in Togo have called for protests to defend and reinstate the country’s constitution.
“We will never accept this new constitution, even after its promulgation. The Togolese people must decisively look towards 2025,” said David Dosseh, a spokesperson for the civil society groups.
“At that point, a presidential election is absolutely necessary for the people to choose a new president and finally achieve a democratic transition in Togo.”
A troubling report from the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and its partners forecasts that approximately 16 per cent of Nigerians (32 million people) will grapple with severe food insecurity between June and August 2024.
Naija News reports that the study signals an escalating crisis in hunger and deteriorating living conditions not only in Nigeria but across West and Central Africa.
The report indicates an increase from last year’s figures, with the 2024 projection showing a concerning rise in food insecurity during what is traditionally known as the lean season.
The report read, “Looking ahead, the projected outlook for the period June-August 2024 appears even more severe: nearly 52 million people across the 17 analyzed countries are anticipated to face phases 3 to 5 during the lean season of June-August. This translates to 12% of the analyzed population struggling to meet their basic food and nutrition requirements.
“These countries include Mauritania (656 652, 14%), Burkina Faso (2 734 196, 12%), Niger (3 436,892, 13%), Chad (3,364,453, 20%), Sierra Leone (1,569,895, 20%), and Nigeria (31,758,164, 16%).”
A staggering 52 million people across the region are expected to face acute hunger during this period, constituting about 12% of the population analyzed.
For Nigeria specifically, the figures are even more dire, with an estimated 32 million people facing crisis-level or emergency food insecurity conditions.
The situation is particularly critical in the northern states of Sokoto and Zamfara, where over 15% of children are reported to be suffering from acute malnutrition, according to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) analysis.
The report also highlights that several other countries within the region are expected to suffer significant food security challenges.
These include Chad, where 20% of the population could face severe food shortages, and Sierra Leone, which shows similar percentages. Mauritania, Burkina Faso, and Niger are also on the list of nations facing daunting food security challenges.
The IRC has attributed the rising severity of food insecurity across the Sahelian belt to a combination of factors, including increased insecurity, adverse effects of climate change, and deteriorating macroeconomic conditions marked by high inflation rates.
In January 2024, the average inflation rate in the region was recorded at 21%, up from 18% in the previous year. Sierra Leone, in particular, has experienced a dramatic increase, with inflation rates soaring to 54%.
“God told me to do it” - Gun fails to discharge as man shoots at pastor during church service
AFOLABIA man has been arrested after he attempted to shoot the pastor of a church during a service at Jesus’ Dwelling Place Church in North Braddock, Pennsylvania, US on Sunday. But his gun refused to fire.
The 26-year-old man identified as Bernard J. Polite wanted to gun down the pastor, saying, “God told me to do it”.
The incident happened when the Sunday service was ongoing, plunging the congregation into pandemonium as the service was being live-streamed.
‘I ducked’
According to the police press release, Polite of Braddock entered the church just after 1 p.m. and walked towards the front while Rev Glenn Germany was delivering a sermon.
The pastor disclosed that Polite smiled at him and they made eye contact just before he pointed the gun at him.
Germany then ducked out of the way as a male congregant tackled Polite, ABC News reports.
Germany and the member of the church then worked together to wrest the gun away from Polite, who was soon subdued and held until state troopers arrived.
Polite said “God told me to do it” and that he planned to shoot Germany and “wait to be arrested” so he could go to jail and clear his mind, according to court documents.
He faces numerous charges, including aggravated assault and attempted homicide, and was being held Monday without bail at the Allegheny County Jail.
Also, state police said they did not know if Polite has an attorney, and county court records did not list one.
It added that the body of a shot victim was found in a home near the church where Polite had been shortly before going to the church, county police said.
The county Medical Examiner’s office identified the body Monday as Derek Polite, 56, of North Braddock, but did not say if he was related to Bernard Polite.
Polite was not known at the church, officials said. He wandered over to the church after hearing music coming from there, according to court documents.
‘You can hear the gun click’
Recounting the incident, Germany said, “I am feeling grateful that I woke up this morning and that I am here. It could have gone in the opposite direction. But God has intervened and I am grateful for him.”
“I’m so grateful,” he said. “You know, he shot. You can hear the gun click.”
The pastor said he saw Polite walk in and smile at him, but assumed he was coming to speak with another member of the church.
“But instead he came right here where I’m standing… and that’s where he just pulled out the gun,” he said. “I’m looking right down the barrel of the gun.”
Polite appeared to suffer from mental illness, Germany said, and told him he heard voices. “The voices were in his head and said ‘go shoot the pastor.'”
Polite is facing multiple charges, including attempted homicide. He was denied bail and is being detained at a jail in Pittsburgh ahead of a preliminary hearing next week.

Rasaq and Shade celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary at their residence in Lagos on April 25.

The relatives of the embattled former Chairman of the Park Management System (PMS), Alhaji Lamidi Mukaila, also known as Auxiliary, have expressed displeasure over his recent arrest.
Recalls that operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) arrested the embattled former Oyo State PMS boss.
The recent arrest comes a year after Auxiliary was arrested after being linked to an alleged attempt by his loyalists to cause trouble in the state following the dissolution of the PMS committee by the state Governor, Seyi Makinde.
Auxiliary was again rearrested at about 4:00 pm on Tuesday at his residence in the Olodo area of Ibadan, the Oyo state capital.
Two women who claimed to be relatives of Auxiliary but hid their identities have since responded in a video that Vanguard claimed to have obtained. The video detailed the incident involving the former NURTW leader and security personnel.
One of the women recording the video mentioned that the individuals who took Auxiliary did not disclose their identities before taking him into custody.
“One of his junior brothers called me that they have arrested Papa without doing anything. He told me that Papa was busy enjoying himself at the table there.
“Then, one of his boys who happens to be my child saw a black unidentified security van and said, “are these not DSS men?”
“Before Papa (Auxiliary) lifted up his head, the masked men had cornered him. When Papa saw them, he didn’t run away since there is no skeleton in his cupboard. It is someone who has done a bad thing that should be afraid.
“As he wanted to go upstairs, one of his boys was trying to shield him but the security men moved faster to stop him. They took him into a waiting van. The van has no number plate or any inscriptions on it. They took him away without telling us where they were taking him to.
“This is not fair now. How should they arrest an innocent man?” she said.
Auxiliary has been on the run since last year after security forces were informed about his intention to incite chaos and disorder in Oyo State.
His house was raided, leading to the discovery of a significant cache of weapons, including firearms, machetes, and other hazardous tools.
Despite his attempt to ascend the stairs, he was prevented by armed individuals who fired warning shots into the air.
